Mozambique’s Minister of the Sea, Inland Waters and Fisheries, Lídia Cardoso, has announced that 92% of national fisheries production results from artisanal fishing. The minister then called on industrial operators to regain the space they once occupied in the field of exports.
“We encourage ship owners to expand and diversify their activities, not just in catching fish, but also to seek partnerships for the development of the seafood value chain, thus increasing their production and revenue,” she said.
447,000 tons produced
Last year (2021), Mozambique produced a total of 447,000 tonnes of diverse seafood, against a target of 480,000 tonnes, representing a 93% compliance with the planned figure and an increase of around three percent over the total for 2020.
In the same period, the country sold more than 10,000 tons of crustaceans and shellfish. on the international market, a target realisation of 87%, and a growth of around 15% compared to 2020.
The Ministry of the Sea, Inland Waters and Fisheries (MIMAIP) is meeting in Maputo, in its VIII Coordinating Council, under the motto “Sea: Catalyst for the economy today and always”.
Sector minister Lídia Cardoso appealed to participants to be creative, forming intelligent partnerships to make their programmes viable and ensure the fulfilment of goals.
